Moet and Chandon Champagne

Moet and Chandon has to be one of the cheapest entry level premium Champagnes.

The Moet and Chandon sold in St James Power Station is a non-vintage champagne. Non-vintage champagnes are champagnes which are blended by wines of DIFFERENT years to become a house style. Whereas vintage champagne are champagnes made from grapes of a particular year. The quality of the grapes of that particular year must be good enough for the champagne house to declare it a vintage year.

Moet and Chandon is one of the world's largest manufacturers of champagne and one of the best known Champagne houses in the world. They are part of the Lousis Vitton Moet Hennessy group (LVMH)

The most well known and most expensive label under Moet and Chandon is the Dom Perignom Champagne. As of 2006, the current release of Dom Pérignon is from the 1998 vintage and the current release of Dom Pérignon Rosé is from the 1996 vintage. Apparently, the vintage of Dom Perignom sold in SJPS is 1999. Since the official website did not put the 1999 vintage up for sale, I believe it is inferior compared to the 1998 bottle.

"What makes vintage Champagne better? Well, status for one – many vintage Champagnes are made in small quantities, so low supply and high demand beefs up the price and the prestige of a vintage bottle. And of course, beyond the status symbol of vintage Champagne is the taste and care given to the grapes. For vintage Champagne, the grapes are carefully selected, the blends painstakingly created and the ageing process lovingly prolonged. Vintage Champagnes are often more complex and flavorful than their non-vintage counterparts, and can often age for up to a decade or two, although most houses release their bottles at an optimum time for drinking. Vintage Champagne differs from non-vintage because the winemaker's focus is on that specific year rather than a blend to match the house style."
